Atelier Li Xinggang – The Third Space
An architectural experiment integrating urban density, nature, and community life in Tangshan
Section
Section Title
The Chinese architecture firm Atelier Li Xinggang has addressed a central challenge of contemporary urbanization: connecting the daily lives of residents with nature in densely built contexts. The Third Space, in Hebei Province, China, is not simply a residential complex, but an experiment in coexistence between architecture, nature, and urban community. The building takes on the function of a living organism: each terrace, roof courtyard, and common space contributes to creating microclimates, biodiversity, and interactions between plant species and residents, offering a model of integration between urban life and ecosystems.

The conception of the Third Space
The project is based on a principle of organic integration between green spaces and high-density housing. The terraces are conceived as private extensions of the apartments, but organized to form a modular system of urban greenery. Shrubs, plants, and trees are distributed according to patterns that promote sustainability, generating microhabitats and promoting residents’ shared responsibility for maintenance. This approach goes beyond the ornamental: the gardens become tools for participation and ecological awareness, redefining the concept of domestic space as a shared experience.

Design Innovations and Sustainability
From a technical point of view, the Atelier Li Xinggang uses lightweight materials and modular structures to reduce the load on the foundations and increase flexibility in plant arrangement. Integrated rainwater harvesting and automated irrigation systems allow for the maintenance of complex ecosystems within the building. Green roofs contribute to the thermal control of the rooms and to air purification, while the design choices minimize the overall environmental impact.Architecture thus emerges as a tool for ecological mitigation, capable of hosting people and biodiversity in a synergistic relationship.

Cultural and urban impact
The Third Space is part of the Chinese tradition of harmony between buildings and landscape, reinterpreted in a contemporary key. The green terraces act as educational devices, encouraging an understanding of natural cycles, the coexistence of species, and the active care of common spaces. In this context, each resident becomes the custodian of a fragment of nature, experiencing a form of civic responsibility that redefines the perception of residential space. The continuity between interior and exterior, between private and collective, allows for an urban experience that integrates aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability.

Paradigm
The architecture proposed by Atelier Li Xinggang offers a replicable paradigm for contemporary urban design. Complex residential structures can integrate functioning ecosystems, reduce resource consumption, and improve quality of life. This model demonstrates how technology, architecture, and nature can coexist in multifunctional buildings capable of adapting to the needs of urban density, environmental sustainability, and community engagement. The methodologies employed, from structural modularity to intelligent resource management, represent transferable tools for future urban interventions, offering a critical and design-led approach to the problems of the contemporary city.
