91 million visitors in 2017
There are 91 million foreigners who visited Italy last year, 6% more than in 2016. The holidays in the cities of art and culture have been confirmed the most widespread type and with the highest weight in the spending of foreigners but the resumption of seaside stays continued. The growth of tourist spending from abroad has affected all the regions, especially the South and the Center. After a decade of stagnation, the spending of Italian travelers abroad also increased (8.9%), together with the number of travelers and overnight stays; in 2017 it was equal to 1.4% of GDP.

Italy fifth in the world
In 2017, world tourism revenues from international tourism were € 1,156 billion, up 3.5% compared to 2016. The US remains the country with the highest revenues (€ 180.3 billion), with a world share of 15.6%. This is followed by Spain (€ 60.2 billion) and France (€ 53.7 billion), while Italy is fifth with € 39.2 billion, corresponding to a market share of world tourist revenues of 3.4%. France remains the most visited destination (89.8 million arrivals) followed by Spain and the United States (81.8 and 73.0 million). Even for the number of visitors, Italy is fifth.

International of Italy above the European average
In the comparison between the four major euro area countries, in 2017 the surplus of the tourism balance of Italy in relation to GDP was lower, as in the previous year, only to that of Spain; was higher than the average EU and the euro area. Revenues from international tourism in Italy amounted to 2.3 per cent of GDP, a level just below the average for the EU and the euro area (2.5%).



Foreign travelers increase, one-sixth of the Germans
In 2017 the total expenditure of foreign travelers in Italy increased by 7.7% compared to 2016, exceeding 39 billion. Visitors from the euro area, which historically contribute significantly to Italy's total tourist revenue (over 40%), provided the main contribution to growth in 2017, increasing by 11.3%. Germany, along with the US and France, continues to be the largest importer of tourism services from Italy: the expenses of German tourists in our country have grown by almost 15% last year, second only to those of the Canadians. In 2017, Germany represented the main country of origin also in terms of visitor numbers.
